Don't expect the whole country to stop for the 25th. Christians make up roughly one person in every forty of India's population, going by the 2011 census. Yet the festive season is hard to miss in the big cities, where lights go up and Christian families fill the churches.

How do people celebrate Christmas in India?

Midnight Mass comes first.

Incredible India, the government's tourism site, calls it one of the most cherished Christmas traditions in the country, with Christian families gathering on Christmas Eve in churches dressed with lights, stars and nativity scenes. Most churches follow the service with a Christmas feast of roast chicken, regional curries and chutneys, while homes trade gifts and greetings over plum cake, rose cookies, bebinca and kidyo.

Delhi's tourism office describes malls in red and green, hotels serving roast turkey and mulled wine and one of the city's biggest Midnight Mass services at the Sacred Heart Cathedral.

Goa and its Portuguese churches

Goa's Christmas carries a Portuguese influence, with St Francis Xavier's Cathedral named for Midnight Mass. Travelsphere's Golden Triangle and Goa tour showed no departure over the 25th when we checked.

Kerala and Fort Kochi

Kerala's Christmas celebration means church services and cakes shared between families, while decorations fill Fort Kochi during the Cochin Festival, though our Kerala holidays run at other times.

Shimla, Shillong and Kolkata

Shimla and Shillong get the snowy Christmas card treatment from the tourism board, though nobody can book you snow. Kolkata has its own big-city celebration.

On the Golden Triangle

You're here for the Taj Mahal, the tigers and Rajasthan's forts, with Christmas as the backdrop. If candlelit carols are the whole point, this isn't quite that holiday.

Where will you be on Christmas Day?

It depends on the year, so we've matched each day plan to its departure dates: confirm the running order when you book.

Both Just You departures for December 2026 showed as sold out when we checked in November 2026 and the Shimla version starts in 2027. This Christmas, that leaves the Travelsphere tour.

The Taj Mahal closes on Fridays, so watch the calendar: Christmas Day is a Friday in 2026 and Christmas Eve is a Friday in 2027.

Check which day your tour reaches Agra.

Will there be a Christmas dinner or a church service?

Brochures skim over this. Dinner is included on the 25th on every one of these holidays, but neither operator's day plan promises turkey and crackers. The December 2026 Travelsphere date has a local dinner with entertainment, which beats a limp sprout!

Midnight Mass isn't listed either and none of these tours is in Delhi on Christmas Eve. If a service matters, ask the operator before you book whether a church can be reached from that night's hotel.

Cold mornings, fog and winter air

Days around Delhi are usually mild but nights turn properly cold, so pack layers for the Taj before sunrise and for early game drives.

FCDO health advice, checked in November 2026, calls severe air pollution a major health hazard from October to February, worst in north Indian cities, with older travellers and those with medical conditions especially affected. The FCDO also says accidents are common at night and in fog. Speak to your GP if you've got a chest or heart condition.

How much walking is there?

More than a Christmas holiday suggests.

Travelsphere and Just You both grade their tours Active: "can include moderate walking and longer days". Just You adds that its itineraries are very full, with some early starts and long days.

That's Old Delhi on foot, steps and slopes at the hilltop Amber Fort, crowds at the Taj, long road days and rough forest tracks in Ranthambore. Limited walking is a real question, so ask about steps and distances before you commit: our guide to India holidays for over 60s goes through it.

Going alone at Christmas

Just You tours are only for people travelling alone, with a twin or double room of your own, no single supplement, a maximum of twenty in the group and a UK airport lounge. Travelsphere takes solo guests too, with a single supplement. Solo India tours compares the rest.

What does a tour take off your hands?

  • Return flights from Heathrow on these departures
  • A Holiday Director, plus a local guide with Travelsphere
  • Overseas transfers and porterage
  • Hotels chosen in advance
  • Game drives in Ranthambore arranged for you
  • Breakfast and dinner most days, with some lunches
  • One booking, with someone to ask when something goes wrong

Not on the inclusion lists: your visa, tips and extras such as the optional Ranthambore Fort trip. See what's in the price.

What about New Year in India?

Most of these holidays have you home before the fireworks. The Amritsar version is the exception, with the Golden Temple's night ceremony, then a flight back to Delhi on New Year's Eve for a hotel dinner and a flight home the next day. Shimla guests land back in the UK on the 31st.

Sorting the paperwork in time

You must have a visa to visit India unless you hold an OCI card, according to GOV.UK entry requirements (checked November 2026). Your passport needs at least six months left after you arrive and two blank pages, plus an online e-arrival card just before you land. Check before you go.

For jabs, GOV.UK says to look at least eight weeks ahead, while the NHS wants you talking to a travel health professional at least four to six weeks before you leave. Speak to your GP or a travel clinic.

FCDO travel advice warned against travel to parts of India when we checked in November 2026, including Jammu and Kashmir, Manipur and land near the Pakistan border. It adds that no travel can be guaranteed safe.

Which Christmas holiday should you pick?

Short on time? Take the Travelsphere tour, the shortest way to see the Golden Triangle with tigers in Ranthambore added. Want the hills as well? The Shimla extension brings the toy train. Travelling alone? Just You goes further, on to Varanasi at dawn on the Ganges.

Christmas and New Year in India: your questions

Is Christmas a big celebration in India?

It's a major festival for India's Christian community and very visible in big cities such as Delhi, though most people aren't marking a religious festival of their own.

Can I go to Midnight Mass on an escorted tour?

It isn't listed in the Travelsphere or Just You day plans and none of these tours is in Delhi on Christmas Eve. Ask the operator before you book whether a church can be reached from that night's hotel.

Is the Taj Mahal open on Christmas Day?

It opens every day except Friday, so it's closed on Christmas Day 2026, a Friday. It's open in 2027 and 2028, though the tours visit on other days. Check which day your tour reaches Agra.

What's the weather like at Christmas?

Around Delhi, expect mild days and cold nights, with fog possible in the mornings. Take warm layers for sunrise visits and game drives.

Is a Christmas tour of India suitable for over 60s?

It can be if you're happy with a full pace. The tours are graded Active with early starts, long road days and uneven ground, so it's not an easy week. Read the FCDO's note on winter air pollution if you've got a heart or chest condition.

Can I travel to India alone at Christmas?

Yes. Just You tours are only for people travelling alone, with a room of your own and no single supplement. Travelsphere takes solo guests too, with a single supplement.

Will I be home for New Year?

On most departures, yes. The Amritsar version is the exception: you're in Delhi on New Year's Eve and fly home on New Year's Day.
