What does a Golden Triangle India tour take off your hands?

Nearly everything that makes India daunting the first time.

Picture the morning in Agra. It's still dark when you leave the hotel, your entry is sorted and a guide is at your side, so when first light reaches the white marble you've nothing to organise except your camera.

  • Return flights from a UK airport and a transfer when you land
  • The road between cities with a driver who knows it
  • Entry to the sights on the itinerary, with a local guide
  • Hotels chosen in advance, plus breakfast and dinner on most days
  • Porterage, so you aren't hauling cases up hotel steps
  • One booking and a tour manager when something goes wrong

Escorted from the UK or booked with a Delhi agent?

Delhi agents sell this route too. Neither is wrong, but they're different things.

A private car wins on freedom. A group tour wins if you'd rather not deal with ticket touts at the gate. Travelsphere says its holidays are protected by ATOL and ABTA. The Civil Aviation Authority lets you check any company's ATOL before you pay. Our guide to what the price covers explains tips and supplements.

What you'll see on the way round

Old Delhi comes first on Travelsphere's Beyond the Golden Triangle, on foot past the marble domes of Jama Masjid and then by cycle rickshaw ride through the Chandni Chowk bazaar, with the Red Fort's walls ahead. New Delhi follows, with its wide boulevards and Humayun's Tomb. Just You adds the spice market.

Visitors cross the red sandstone courtyard of Jama Masjid, one of the first stops in Old Delhi
Jama Masjid is a working mosque, so dress for it.

Agra is why most people book. UNESCO lists the Taj Mahal and also Agra Fort, the red sandstone stronghold where Shah Jahan was imprisoned by his son. Travelsphere then crosses to Mehtab Bagh for the mausoleum from across the Yamuna.

Next comes Fatehpur Sikri, Akbar's deserted capital, then Jaipur, the Pink City. Amber Fort holds a hall whose walls and ceilings glitter with tiny pieces of glass! Check the day list: Travelsphere drives past the Palace of the Winds, while Riviera stops at the Hawa Mahal and the Jantar Mantar observatory. Our Jaipur guide covers the City Palace.

Amber Fort climbs its hillside above Jaipur, with the walls reflected in the still water of Maota Lake

Almost every trip adds tiger safaris, so the Ranthambore tours get their own page. No tiger is ever promised.

How hard are the days?

Harder than the word holiday suggests. Travelsphere and Just You grade these tours Active, meaning moderate walking and longer days. Expect dawn starts, crowded lanes, uneven paths, steps and ramps at each fort, heat and long road days, starting with the Delhi to Agra drive. Safari vehicles lurch over rough tracks.

Free mornings and hotel pools help. Limited walking? Ring the operator first, because a driver doesn't make Amber Fort flat. See India holidays for over 60s.

Which trip suits you?

For a first time in India, Beyond the Golden Triangle flies from Heathrow, Birmingham or Manchester and sleeps at a heritage haveli in Jaipur. Just You's An Invitation to India is the solo version, with a room of your own and other solo trips to compare. Riviera's India tour takes the Shatabdi Express to Ranthambore National Park.

Got longer? Add Shimla's toy train or a Goa finish. Our best time guide helps pick the month.

Visa, health and safety, checked November 2026

You must have a visa unless you hold an OCI card, say GOV.UK's entry rules. Your passport needs six months left on arrival plus two blank pages.

Speak to your GP or a travel clinic at least four to six weeks ahead, as the NHS advises. The FCDO warns that severe air pollution is a major hazard in north Indian cities, especially from October to February, which is peak tour season.

The FCDO advises against travel to parts of India including Jammu and Kashmir, though not Delhi, Agra or Jaipur. It also warns of terrorism risk including at tourist attractions, scams and a high death rate on the roads, so check before you go. A driver and guide handle some of that, not all of it.

Golden Triangle tour questions

How long is a Golden Triangle tour from the UK?

The shortest trips on this page run for 10 days, including a night on the plane going out. Travelsphere's Beyond the Golden Triangle spends eight nights in hotels and lodges. Longer versions add Shimla, Goa or Udaipur. Our itinerary guide sets out how the days fall.

Are international flights and transfers included?

Yes, on every trip listed here. Each operator includes return flights from the UK and transfers in India. Heathrow is the usual departure airport and Travelsphere and Just You also sell Manchester and Birmingham on some tours. Check the airport against your chosen date.

Which meals and hotels should I expect?

On Travelsphere's shortest tour you get breakfast and dinner on each hotel night, a few lunches and a welcome drink, with accommodation in four and five-star hotels, lodges and a heritage hotel. Riviera lists three to five-star hotels. Named hotels appear on each tour page, though operators can change them.

Is this a good group tour for a first time in India?

It's the classic first trip because the sights are close enough to link by road and a guided tour handles the hard parts. It's still a busy trip with early mornings and crowds. Read what to expect on a first visit before you book.

Is the Taj Mahal open every day?

No. The official Taj Mahal site, checked November 2026, says it's closed on Fridays for general viewing and opens shortly before sunrise, closing shortly before sunset. Food and tripods aren't allowed inside and big bags slow the security check. Shoe covers come with a foreign visitor's ticket.

What paperwork do I need for India?

You'll need a visa, which you apply for yourself. You'll also need a passport with enough time left on it. GOV.UK, checked November 2026, also says foreign nationals must fill in an online e-arrival card before reaching immigration, up to 72 hours ahead. Our India visa guide has the steps.

When do these tours run?

Departures on this page run from September to April, with most in the cooler months between October and March. Christmas departures have their own page. Summer isn't offered on these tours.

Can I join an escorted tour on my own?

Yes. Just You tours are only for people travelling alone, with a guaranteed room of your own and no single supplement on its shortest India trip. Travelsphere and Riviera take solo guests too, with a supplement. Riviera also runs some departures just for solo travellers.
